For months now I have been thinking about making art using the land…specifically making art that is if the place(s) I call home. The notion of terroir in the winemaking industry is the closest I can get to it…or indeed the concept of domicile for taxation legislative purposes (hey, I used to be an expert in such things don’t ya know) . From my POV these days though it is all about home and family. Safety and love. But how to produce art imbued with these qualities?
I bought a copy of The Organic Artist by Nick Neddo a few years ago and had been inspired by its imaginative use of nature as an art supply toolbox. Can I do the same using materials from my home.
I am starting with paper…papyrus to be exact. It isn’t paper because it’s not made from a pulp. I am experimenting with vegetables, carrots at the moment. I am using Helen Herbert’s Papermaking with Garden Plants and Common Weeds as a guide. It’s a bit of a long process but I will report back.
In the meantime, you might want to check out this lovely group of ladies…I am going to be on their August bank holiday Art retreat making art from the land. If you want to join in please click on the link!
